Hogle-Ireland, Inc. is currently updating the City of Hawaiian Gardens General Plan. Hawaiian Gardens is a nearly built out community, 0.9 square miles in total area. With a recent comprehensive update to the zoning code in 2006, the City wanted to ensure the goals and policies of the General Plan truly reflect the vision and direction of the community. The Hawaiian Gardens General Plan not only includes an update of the seven State-mandated elements, but also optional elements that include Economic Development, Capital Improvements, and Air Quality. In addition, a Community Design Element will also be created to be the City's comprehensive design guide.

The General Plan Update has emphasized public outreach, ensuring that the community has substantial input throughout the Update process. Community outreach has included formation of a General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) to provide input in all facets of the plan's development, community workshops, and interviews with City staff and stakeholders. Announcements in the form of General Plan newsletters, public workshop mailings, and the creation of a Hawaiian Gardens General Plan website are methods used to inform the community of General Plan Update events.
